A voice reader for ebooks on iPhone and iPad
justRead's Read Aloud speaks the EPUBs you own, with Apple voices or its own neural voices that run on the phone. It also reads a PDF that has a text layer. It is a voice reader, not an audiobook store.

What you get from a voice reader
Your own books
Read Aloud speaks EPUBs you already own, and PDFs that have a text layer.
Two kinds of voice
Read Aloud can use Apple's system voices or justRead's own neural voices, Kokoro and Supertonic.
Screen off
Prepare a book in advance and its audio keeps playing with the screen locked.
In the car
CarPlay can play a book's prepared Read Aloud audio.
Follow along
The sentence being read is highlighted, and the page turns itself as the voice moves on.
The voices, tier by tier
The neural voices run on the device, so listening needs no account, no server and no signal.
- Apple voices
- Apple's system voices cover every language the app is translated into.
- Kokoro
- Kokoro has eight English voices, five American and three British.
- Supertonic
- Supertonic has ten voices, five female and five male, and each one can speak any of 31 languages.
Limits worth knowing before you rely on it
Preparation
A book is prepared once before it plays like audio, and preparation runs in a queue that survives leaving the app.
Word underline
The word underline follows the Supertonic voice by an estimate, not exact timing, and not every voice highlights word by word.
Scanned pages
A scanned PDF has no text to speak, and the app says so.
Trial
justRead has a 14-day free trial of the whole app, and a paywall appears after it.
When you want a human narrator instead
A voice reader speaks text. A narrated audiobook is a recording, and it is a different file.
justRead plays audiobooks in m4b, m4a, mp3, aac and flac, and in the .audiobook and .zab package formats.
The audiobook player page covers speed, chapters and the sleep timer.
