How to turn a book into an audiobook on iPhone
On an iPhone you do not convert a book into a file. A voice reads it aloud. justRead prepares your EPUB once, then plays it with the screen locked. It cannot save that audio as a file, so you listen inside the app.
See what you get
Two different jobs: listening and making a file
Listen to a book you own
A voice reads the text aloud on your phone. Nothing is exported, and the book stays your own file.
Make an audio file you can keep
A generator or recorder produces a file. That is a separate tool, and it needs the text, a voice and room for the result.
If you only want narrated recordings, the best M4B audiobook players are compared in one list.
What you get, and what you do not
On your phone
Read Aloud speaks an EPUB on your phone, and a PDF too when the file holds real text.
With the screen locked
Once a book is prepared, its audio carries on while the screen is locked.
In the car
Prepared Read Aloud audio can come through CarPlay.
Not a file
The prepared audio stays inside the app, with no option to save it as a file.
Choose the voice first
You can pick Apple's built-in voices, or the Kokoro and Supertonic neural voices that come with justRead.
Of those, Kokoro offers eight English voices, and Supertonic speaks 31 languages.
A scanned book is only pictures of pages, so a voice has nothing to read. Check that you can select a sentence in the file first.
Fonts, themes and voices are all listed on the features page.
If you already own an audiobook file
Audiobook files in flac, aac, mp3, m4a or m4b play in justRead, as do .audiobook and .zab packages.
A folder of loose chapter files becomes one audiobook in your library. Details are on the audiobook player page.
Files you own, nothing else
justRead plays DRM-free files you already own and has no handling for protected store audiobooks.
Keep to books you have the right to listen to. The reading happens on your phone, from your own library, in the voice you chose.
